The Chinese chiller market

Real Gross domestic product (GDP) growth in China came to 7.7% in 2013, the second consecutive year of growth below 8%. Chinese chiller market growth followed the economic slowdown.

The chiller market  was valued at USD 2.7 billion in 2013 to mark a year-on-year growth of 7.30%.

According to data from the China Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning Industry Association (CRAA), centrifugal chillers enjoyed 12.5% year-on-year growth on a volume basis in 2013. Many Chinese enterprises have improved their centrifugal chiller technologies to better compete against overseas manufacturers.

Activity had been brisk in the Chinese screw chiller market until 2012; however, the segment saw only slight growth in 2013.

Facing booming demand in China, scroll chillers enjoyed sharp year-on-year growth in 2013. Their total sales volume increased by 14.2% in 2013.

The reciprocating chiller market continues to be encroached upon by screw and scroll chillers However, sales of reciprocating chillers saw 1.2% year-on-year growth on a volume basis in 2013. With strengths in air-to-water heat pumps and refrigeration, the reciprocating-chiller market is expected to see flat growth in terms of production and sales volume in 2014.

In 2013, the sales value of absorption chillers saw 3.6% year-on-year growth. Steam-fired type and heat-pump type chillers accounted for 64% of the total absorption chiller sales value.
